MY DESIRE

Series 4

By Abubakar Balqees opeyemi, 100 level MELL

I had finished dressing and waiting for Zainab’s arrival to trick my mum as planned. I was about calling her when I heard a knock at my door. Finally, she arrived my place.

I asked her of what to tell my mum and she said she already told her she came to call me to accompany her on an errand.

I went to my mum’s room, informed her of our departure and she gave her consent.

On our way to Zainab’s place, we were discussing how my make-up was supposed to be “it should be a party makeup, you should apply the kind of makeup that would make him feel wow” Zainab said and I said “no, I want something simple, one that can be easily wiped off. Or have you forgotten what we told mum?” “Ooh that’s true” Zainab said.

We were still arguing on the colour of lipstick suitable for the dress I put on when I heard “Asalamu aleikum” from behind. I replied with “Waleikumsalam” without looking back. I knew it was Salman again.

“Sister, please try and hear me out” he said trying to pull me back while I looked back with slap on his face, looked at him in the eye and said “what do you take me for? one of those girls you meet by the roadside, exchange contacts with and start deceiving? did you check yourself in the mirror this morning? do you even know how dirty you are right now? Do you…” I wanted to continue but Zainab said to me “baby girl, calm down please”

She faced Salman and said “young man, take a good look at my friend, she doesn’t move with poor guys like you. So stay away from her, please”

Salman who has been quite then said “I’m sorry, I just…” he wanted to continue but Zainab and I hissed simultaneously and made our ways out on him.

Aminat was already at Zainab’s place waiting anxiously for our arrival. She was there to convince me not to go out with Abdulqodri. “Layo, what do you know about this guy? Who is he? Have you ever asked yourself what he wants from you? Aminat questioned me.

I wanted to answer but Zainab interrupted “What else will a guy want from a pretty girl? I’m sure he wants Layo in his life. Or what kind of a guy will see a pretty girl like Layo and will not fall totally for her?”

“Thank you oo my friend, Aminat! That guy is handsome and rich, he is every girl’s dream, and believe me, he’s madly into me” I boasted.

Aminat laughed and said “madly into you? A guy you met just yesterday? The guy you know nothing about? Have you even asked yourself questions like what if he wants to use and dump me? What if he is a ritualist? What if…” she wanted to continue but Zainab said “Aminaaat! What exactly is your problem? Are you jealous?

” I? Jealous?” she laughed and continued “I’m only trying to make a friend see she’s about to make a mistake she might live to regret for the rest of her life”

At that point, I got annoyed and angrily said to Aminat “See, lecturer, it’s my life and I can choose to live it as it pleases me”

Aminat said again “it’s truly your life but…” She wanted to continue and I asked her to stop. She did and I wished her all the best.

After applying my Make-up, I called Abdulqodri and told him I was ready. I described where to come and pick me and I asked him to call me when when he gets there.

I waited for two hours and Abdulqodri didn’t show up, I called him severely but he didn’t pick his calls.

What could have happened to Abdulqodri? Did he later showed up or not?

To be continued…
